The western part of Rajasthan, in the Thar desert, did not have decent cricket training facilities nor did the area have a strong cricket culture when Ravi was growing up there. To make up for this, he and his friends, in collaboration with 2 cricket coaches, had built a cricket academy in Jodhpur from the ground up and named it the ‘Spartans Cricket Academy’. Due to financial constraints, Ravi and his friends had to perform most of the construction and masonry work on their own. He used to travel daily on his bicycle to the academy which was 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) away from his home.
He was rejected in the state Under-16 trials once and in the state Under-19 trials twice by the local selectors. However, former Rajasthan wicketkeeper Dishant Yagnik had requested the selectors to give him another chance. He was invited to another trial in the state capital of Jaipur and had picked up a wicket with his very first delivery after which he was finally selected in Rajasthan’s Under-19 squad.
He went on to become the leading wicket-taker in the 2019 Vinoo Mankad Trophy (the premier limited-overs domestic competition for men’s under-19 cricket in India) with 17 dismissals in just 7 matches. This eventually paved his way for a call-up to the India squad for the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, his breakthrough tournament.
In January 2020, in that tournament’s group stage match against Japan, he had recorded stunning figures of 4 wickets for just 5 runs from 8 overs. Even more astonishing was the fact that he had conceded the first of those 5 runs only after picking all 4 of those wickets. He was named the ‘Player of the Match’.
He repeated the 4-wicket haul in the very next game, against New Zealand, as well and was named the ‘Player of the Match’ again. In the final, against Bangladesh, he had bowled another heroic spell of 4/30 (10 overs) but it was not enough to save India from defeat in a tight contest.
In February 2022, he had his T20I debut.
In December 2023, Ravi became the No.1 T20I bowler in the world.
