Early on in his career, Guimaraes completed his formation with Audax. He played the final three minutes of the latter’s 2-1 Campeona to Paulista victory away to Bragantino on April 9, 2015, at the age of just 17.

After making an impression in the Copa So Paulo de Futebol Junior that year, Guimaraes was elevated to the starting lineup for the 2017 season. He signed a loan agreement with Athletico Paranaense on May 11 and was initially tasked with playing for the under-23 team until April 2018.

On June 17, 2017, Guimares made his Série A debut as he replaced Deivid in the second half of a 1-0 away loss to Atlético Goianiense. He was purchased outright on March 1 of the following year and signed a deal through 2021.

On March 10, 2018, Guimaraes scored his first goal as a senior, making it his team’s fourth goal in a 7-1 victory over Rio Branco-PR at home to win the Campeonato Paranaense for the season.

Then, under new manager Tiago Nunes, he established himself as a reliable starter for the core group, and on February 5 of this year, he extended his contract until 2023.

Guimaraes signed a four-and-a-half-year c ontract with Ligue 1 team Lyon on January 29, 2020. According to reports, Athletico Paranaense received a €20 million transfer fee along with a 20% sell-on clause.

For an estimated sum of up to £40 million, Guimaraes signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Premier League team Newcastle United on January 30, 2022. On February 8th, he made his debut as a late substitution in a 3-1 victory against Everton.

On March 10, in his entire debut game for Newcastle, he scored his first goal with a “powerful back-heel volley” in a 2-1 victory at Southampton. On April 17, he scored his first two goals for Newcastle in a 2-1 victory over Leicester City; the game-winning goal came in the 95th minute.

Prior to receiving his senior cap for Brazil, Guimaraes was qualified to play for Spain. Guimaraes participated in the 2020 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament for Brazil’s under-23 team.

He was added to the team for the 2020 Summer Olympics on June 17, 2021. Guimaraes was called up to the senior Brazil team in September 2020 in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualification matches against Bolivia and Peru on October 9 and 13, respectively.

He had already been called up for the Brazilian team in March 2020, but because to the COVID-19 pandemic, that summoning was delayed. On November 17, 2020, he made his debut in a 2-0 away victory over Uruguay.
