Who’s got the sweetest disposition?
One guess – guess who!
Who never, never starts an argument?
Who never shows a bit of temperament?
Who’s never wrong but always right?
Who’d never dream of starting a fight?
Who gets stuck with all the bad luck?
No one… but Donald Duck!
Those words, written by composer Oliver Wallace, are from Donald Duck’s official theme song. From 1947 to 1959, the melody could be heard at the beginning of each of his cartoon shorts. The lyrics perfectly capture his character, or at least how he surely views himself.
This year, the irascible bird with the “fowl” temper turned 88 years old. In honor of his birthday, which is June 9, we thought we’d take a look at some of the best places to find Donald in Walt Disney World.
1. Mickey’s PhilharMagic: Fantasyland
Despite being named for Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck is the true star of Mickey’s PhilharMagic, a 4-D theatrical experience located in Fantasyland.
The movie is a magical mystery tour of Disney music, as Donald is swept hilariously through a variety of classic films and songs, such as “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid, “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast, and “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” from The Lion King.
As you might expect, Donald doesn’t have the best of luck as he jumps from film to film, getting shocked, soaked with buckets of water, and very nearly trampled by animals in the Pride Lands. Of course, he also finds himself serenaded by Ariel, flying over Agrabah on a magic carpet, and swooning over delicious food in Beast’s castle.
At the end of the movie, Donald is shot out of the screen and crashes through the wall at the back of the theater. It’s a delightful effect that never fails to elicit giggles.
After exiting the attraction, make sure to take a look at the Donald Duck figure inside the adjoining gift shop. He’s caught in a tangle of brass musical instruments and hopping mad. It’s one of the best photo opportunities in the Magic Kingdom.
2. Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros: Mexico Pavilion
Located within the stunning pyramid in Epcot’s World Showcase, the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros is a leisurely boat ride that celebrates the culture of Mexico. The attraction follows José Carioca and Panchito as they attempt to track down Donald before their big concert.
The chase takes them to some of the country’s iconic landmarks as they hunt for their friend. Eventually, your boat drifts into an “it’s a small world”-esque fiesta scene full of vibrant color and adorable dolls that populate a Mexican village. See if you can spot the Donald Duck piñata as you pass through this area.
Before the attraction ends, you’ll get to see the Three Caballeros performing in Audio-Animatronic form. The figures are true Walt Disney World relics, tracing their origins back to the Mickey Mouse Revue.
3. Donald’s Dino-Bash: DinoLand U.S.A.
For an up-close and personal encounter with Donald, you’ll have to take a trip back in time. How far back? To the age of dinosaurs! Well, not exactly. You just have to mosey over to Dinoland U.S.A. in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
It seems that Donald learned about the relationship between birds and dinosaurs, and wants to celebrate the connection. That’s why he’s organized Donald’s Dino-Bash, which features meet and greets with Donald, Daisy, Launchpad McQuack, and even Chip and Dale (dressed up as somewhat less than ferocious dinosaurs).
Donald is decked out in a feathered pith helmet, a stylish jacket and vest, as well as a purple sash. His clothing may have been designed by Daisy, because she can be seen showing off some of her sartorial creations elsewhere in the area.
Like many meet and greets, Donald’s Dino Bash went on a temporary hiatus beginning in 2020, but Disney recently announced that it will be returning soon.
4. Pete’s Silly Sideshow: Storybook Circus
Speaking of meet and greets, we’d be remiss not to mention Pete’s Silly Sideshow. Located in the Storybook Circus portion of the Magic Kingdom, the spot gives Guests of all ages the opportunity to meet a few of Disney’s most iconic characters as they embrace their inner circus performer.
There is Madame Daisy Fortuna (a fortune teller), the Great Goofini (a daredevil pilot), the Wonder-Pup Pluto, and The Astounding Donaldo (a snake charmer). In the past, Guests could also meet Minnie Magnifique (a poodle trainer from France). The theming and costumes make it feel as though you’ve truly wandered into a traveling circus, and the Astounding Donaldo is definitely one of the highlights.
5. Disney’s All-Star Resorts
The All-Star resorts are home to some of the most charming theming outside of the parks, and all three include encounters with the one and only Donald Duck.
At All-Star Movies, you can get your picture taken with a statue of Donald from the Noah’s Ark scene from Fantasia 2000. Daisy is there too!
Over at All-Star Sports, you’ll find a figure of Donald playing tennis with his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Or rather, the boys seem to be playing a game of baseball on the court while Donald yells at them from the other side of the net.
Finally, you can see Donald with his friends José Carioca and Panchito Pistoles at the Calypso Pool located at All-Star Music. The figures Three Caballeros can be found at the center of the pool, with water squirting from Panchito’s guns.
6. The Haunted Mansion: Liberty Square
It may surprise you to know that Donald Duck can be found inside the Haunted Mansion. Don’t worry! He hasn’t joined the 999 happy haunts in permanent residence, but you can find his image inside the dusty old abode. As your Doom Buggy passes by the endless hallway, you’ll see a plush and elegant looking chair ornamented with golden embroidery. Though it is a bit abstract, a close look at the design reveals it to be Donald’s face!
While those are just a few of the places to encounter the avian icon, they are some of our favorites. Here’s to many happy returns of the day for the one and only, the legend himself: Donald Duck.
