On Saturday night, Harry Styles put on a show at The Bowery Ballroom in the Big Apple as part of the iHeartRadio’s Secret Session with Harry Styles. E! Online reported that the singer-songwriter performed several of his songs, including “Golden” and “Adore You.”

The 26-year-old former One Direction star also performed some of his earlier tracks, including “Kiwi” and “Spirit of the Times.” Even though Styles has only been working as a solo artist for a little while, the songwriter has built up an impressive number of tracks.

During a Question and Answer session, Styles opened up about some of his lyrics, what inspires him to make music, and how he goes about doing it. The singer said to the interviewer that he kicks off the process by simply writing songs for himself and the audience.

It’s the only thing really on his mind, and nothing else. According to the ex-One Direction member, his process for making music is pretty simple: He tries to make songs that he and his friends can dance along and have fun too.

Styles added that when he first started writing his new record, he felt he had to “tick off checkboxes.” In other words, the artist claims he felt like he was being held to a particular standard. And when in that mindset, the singer remarked, he makes his least favorite music by far.

The 26-year-old went on to say that he just wants to make the music he wants, rather than trying to put out a very commercially successful album now, and then releasing what he wants later in his career.

Furthermore, Styles admits he has been doing a lot of things for himself lately, which he described as a consequence of just getting older and having a better idea of who he truly is.

Back in February, it was reported by multiple outlets that Lizzo had cracked a few jokes at Styles’ expense. During an interview in the United Kingdom, Lizzo joked on air that she and the “Sign of The Times” singer collaborated the previous night, but of course, her use of the term “collab,” meant something else entirely.
