The MTV Video Music Award for Best Pop Video first started as an annual award in 1999 due to heavy rotation of teen pop acts. This included artists like Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin, and Britney Spears, the latter being the most nominated and awarded act in this category. Fifth Harmony are now the new successors of the award.
Not only are the group the new throne holders, but are now the only girl group in the awards 18 years run (despite not being awarded during one year in 2007 due to the very short-listed awards ceremony) to ever win the Best Pop Video category.
Last year, Beyonce held the title with her ground-breaking video for ‘Formation’.
The girl group were against many tough acts including Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, Shawn Mendes and Miley Cyrus. Although the song only reached a peak of #42 on the Billboard Hot 100, the steamy music video coupled with perfect pop visuals made it a perfect candidate for the Best Pop Video category. The single has also been certified Gold in Canada and Brazil.
